We first heard of Asaba through a viral Instagram post by Elena Joyce sharing her honeymoon impressions. Usually we prefer quiet research through local blogs over following trendy viral spots, but oh my — Elena was so right. We are truly grateful she shared it.
What a lovely coincidence that Misa shares the same name as the owner. This ryokan has been in the same family for generations, and you can feel how deeply Misa has poured her love into every corner of the property, including the warmth of the staff. To top it off, the bedding here is the cloud-softest, most comfortable we have experienced in any five-star stay, literally a dream.
We are glad we decided to stay solely in the spacious Hagi suite (109 m²), with its serene green views over the moss garden. We had initially planned to split nights between Fuji and Hagi in hopes of seeing the cherry tree in full bloom (which we missed this time). For those seeking even more exclusivity, Villa Tenko is the top choice. On our next visit or for our real honeymoon, we would love to return for the Hagoromo suite or Villa Tenko.
The small town sits right at the doorstep, with a lush bamboo forest and many carefully kept traditional shops. We recommend at least two nights; three to four if you want to explore the wider Izu and Shizuoka area.
Some of our favourite moments: lingering in the calm, sunlit corners of the lounge with their incredible views, the pure joy of feeding the koi, and Jenny soaking for half a day across the many baths. Waking each morning to soft greenery, moss, a gentle waterfall and pure nature refreshed our souls completely.
Yes, it is worth the splurge. And yes, we are already hooked to come back.
