Kyotango: Sumihei
Month & Year: April 2026
Room: Sanzenhou (燦然峰)
Some places have yet to find their way onto the international radar — barely known beyond Japan's borders, and all the more precious for it. Sumihei, tucked into the secluded coastline of the Kyoto Tango Peninsula, is one of them. We are glad to be among the first to share it. Best reached by car, the coastal drive alone is worth it. Wide open sea, fresh salt air, nineteen rooms, no crowds, and views that stretch as far as the eye can follow.
Arrival sets the tone immediately. The lobby welcomes guests with freshly roasted sweet potatoes, onsen snacks, and unlimited sake tasting. Beside it, a 24/7 store invites you to choose your yukata, belt, and craft your own personal scent pouch. As is Japanese custom, wearing a yukata transforms the experience.
Our room, the Sanzenhou “燦然,” meaning radiant shimmering light, offered seventy-seven square metres with a private terrace, indoor hot spring bath, and an outdoor onsen entirely your own. Stormy weather only made it more extraordinary — cold rain, warm mineral-rich water, a wild restless sea. Some experiences cannot be planned.
Beyond your room, six privately reservable open-air hot spring batsh are available from 15:00 until 10:00 the following morning, never shared, no rushing, just the view and the water. The largest and most beautiful “Sakuranoyu” is an absolute highlight (. The ryokan calls it “spa hopping”. It is exactly that. When not in the water, the lounge offers a calm retreat with coffee, tea, snacks, and books. Never crowded, most guests are, understandably, elsewhere.
Dinner arrived each evening in a different private corner of the ryokan. Staff spoke excellent English, explained every dish with warmth and knowledge, and anticipated every need without intruding.
Two nights is perfect. Three to four nights, if you want to explore the surrounding beaches in warmer months. For those seeking even more privacy, we highly recommend exploring Sumihei’s sister property “Taiza Awai-Club Villa Sumihei Shirosihma”, detached viallas on a small island almost entirerly to yourself. Already on our list for our next visit.
